Winter time. The time of big snowflakes, cold temperatures, and lots of sickness going around.
So I guess I shouldn’t have been all that surprised when I woke up last weekend feeling under the weather.
Then over the next couple of days, I developed a fever and a terrible sore throat. Sore throats can be absolutely unbearable at times.
Which is why I wanted to share with you a couple of natural remedies that could help sooth the sorest of throats.
So the next time you develop one, you’ll know exactly what to turn to find relief. Here are some natural sore throat remedies:
Natural Sore Throat Remedies That Works
1. Salt Water
One of the oldest tricks in the book to handle a sore throat is to gargle warm salt water. When you do this, you merely stir some salt into warm water and allow it to dissolve a little before you begin to gargle with it.
This should help to neutralize the acid in your throat which can cause a great deal of pain when your mucous membranes have become agitated. By neutralizing the acid, it stops the membranes from any further agitation and allows them to heal.
2. Wheat Grass
Wheatgrass may sound like a funny thing to drink when you have a sore throat, and it is even funnier to look at since it is a bright green color.
But when you have a sore throat, the chlorophyll from this drink is just what you need. It helps to calm a sore throat and also helps to battle any bacteria that may be causing the sore throat in the first place.
Turmeric is one of those spices that has a lot of healing capabilities. That is why it should come as no surprise that it is also able to help soothe a sore throat naturally.
So this spice is a natural anti-inflammatory. You can mix some of this into your warm salt water to gargle, and your throat should be feeling better in no time flat.
4. Tomato Juice
Tomato juice is not only delicious, but it can also serve as a powerful antioxidant. Which is why you should drink it warm when you have a sore throat.
Plus, you can add some pepper or hot sauce to it to help open your sinus cavities as well. This is an inexpensive and natural way to begin feeling better quickly.
5. Hot Sauce
I just mentioned how hot sauce has a way of making your sinus cavities and membranes open up. You want this when you are battling a sore throat.
So the next time your throat becomes sore, just add some hot sauce to a little water and drink it down. It’ll have everything unblocked, and you will be feeling better in no time.
6. Lemon Water
Lemon water is another old healing remedy for a sore throat. You will want to warm up a glass of water and then squeeze some fresh lemon juice in it.
Then you’ll merely sip on it until you feel the pain in your throat easing off a bit. The lemon is an acidic fruit that makes it difficult for bacteria to keep breeding where it has been applied.
Sage is another powerful herb that has a strong taste with it as well. That is why it isn’t surprising that you can mix sage with hot water.
Then when you consume it, it has a natural way of soothing your throat and also opening and relieving the pressure and pain from your nasal passages as well.
8. Clove Tea
Most tea feels good for your sore throat when you are sick. Yet, you can add herbs or spices to your tea for an added boost.
Well, clove is no different. A lot of people know that cloves applied to a toothache will stop the pain. It can also do the very same thing for your throat when consumed. So if you have a sore throat, reach for the cloves and just sprinkle a few in your hot tea. Your throat will thank you.
This mighty herb is one that is genuinely fascinating but isn’t very well known to a lot of people. Echinacea is an herb that is known to be able to kill viruses! That is pretty impressive considering most modern medicines can’t do that.
So if you are afraid that you’ve caught a virus that is causing a sore throat for you, then reach for this herb. You can steep it in a tea and allow it to instantly soothe your throat while also killing any virus that could be the initial cause of a sore throat.
Myrrh is another powerful spice. Strong smelling spices have a way of opening up sinuses and nasal passages, so things aren’t so constricted.
So you’ll want to use myrrh in water and gargle with it. You’ll have to do it multiple times a day, but since myrrh is a natural antiseptic, it should help your throat mend from whatever has been causing the pain.
Licorice root is another very common and natural option to help soothe a sore throat. You should diffuse the root in water.
Then you’ll just need to gargle with the mixture and wait for the results. You can gargle multiple times per day if needed. It is also known to help reduce phlegm that often agitates your throat and makes it sore in the first place.
12. Raspberry Tea
I’ll be honest, I’m not one that is huge on flavored teas, but I think I could easily handle raspberry tea. Especially if the tea was going to help soothe a sore throat of mine.
So you probably already guessed that you’d just need to pour warm water over raspberry tea leaves. Then you allow the leaves to steep in the water for about 5 or 10 minutes. Once the tea is finished steeping, you just need to gargle with the warm mixture to find relief.
Honey is one of the first things I turn to when I feel a sore throat coming on. We farm with bees, so we have lots of our own, natural honey to use in these instances.
Basically, the honey is a thick coating that will protect your throat from the irritants that are making it hurt. It also has terrific anti-bacterial properties that are great for bringing healing to areas in the body that may need it.
14. Green Tea
Green tea is another natural sore throat remedy that I turn to often when I’m feeling under the weather. Green tea is known to be able to fight infections along with many other diseases as well naturally.
So you just steep some green tea leaves in hot water and sip. The warm drink should feel good for your throat, while the green tea itself can get to work on the infection that might be causing your sore throat.
15. Cold Beverages
I recently had the flu. It was a miserable week, but the biggest surprise was that I had an extremely sore throat. I was continually using these methods to cope with it.
But the biggest surprise was how much it helped my throat to merely stay hydrated and also to indulge in cold beverages, as well as hot. My favorite treat was natural popsicles. It helped to keep my throat moist while the coolness of it helped soothe the achy feeling in my throat too.
If you know me, then you know how much I swear by apple cider vinegar. I absolutely love it. ACV is so easy to make, but it is also inexpensive to buy too.
But I love it because it works for practically everything, including a sore throat. When I have a sore throat, I’ll either put some ACV in warm water to drink it, or I’ll take some teaspoon full directly. ACV is known to fight bacteria, so it helps to fight off anything causing your sore throat to form.
17. Lots of Rest
Finally, one of the best ways to beat a sore throat is to simply get some rest. I don’t mean to just sit around for a few moments.
But instead, some real rest that includes a deep sleep. This will give your body strength to fight whatever is going on inside of you that is the cause of a sore throat.
Well, you now have 17 different natural sore throat remedies. Hopefully, you won’t need these tips anytime soon, but when you do, I hope they’ll help provide the comfort you need for your throat.
But I’d love to hear from you. What do you do when you have a sore throat? Do you use over-the-counter medicine or do you prefer to try natural remedies? Do you prefer cold beverages for your sore throat or hot?
