Are you dreading the cold winter months ahead?
If so, then you might be looking for a few ways to entertain yourself. I understand completely because I feel like I’m trapped indoors and often I find myself getting the ‘wintertime blues.’
Well, now I’ve learned to use the winter months to take up a new hobby, work on the inside of my home, or even better, relax and watch a few movies.
But which movies should you consider? I personally love to watch different survival movies. Some of the movies actually have a few good survival tips.
So I made a list of movies you may want to consider watching this winter:
Survival Movies to Enjoy this Winter
1. As Far As My Feet Will Carry Me
This movie is based around a German soldier who escapes from a labor camp at the end of World War II. He must travel over 8,000 miles to get back to his family.
2. Trapped
Trapped is based around a group of people who are trapped in a small town due to weather conditions. Once they realize that they cannot leave the town until the weather clears because the ferry can’t move and the road into town is blocked, they stumble across a dead body that is washed ashore. It is at this moment that they realize that they are trapped with a murderer.
3. The Road
This movie is based on America after the apocalypse. It follows the tale of a father and son duo who journey across America after it has basically been destroyed. They face many obstacles and celebrate triumphs as they see people at their best and worst.
4. All Is Lost
If you are a Robert Redford fan, then you will enjoy this movie. He is a sailor in this film whose ship was cut loose from the dock due to an accident. All of his equipment is disabled, and he must find his way back to land though he faces many obstacles.
5. The Survivalist
This is another post-apocalyptic film about a man who has seen all he knows become ravaged. He must protect his property from intruders, but he forms an unlikely friendship with a mother/daughter duo. None of them trust each other and the friendship could crumble at any given moment.
6. Cast Away
If you are a Tom Hanks fan, then you’ll want to check out this movie. He finds himself all alone on an island. He must be resourceful to win this battle not only physically, but mentally as well.
7. Everest
This movie is about expeditions up Everest. The journeys are extra difficult because they must face one of the strongest snowstorms ever known to man.
8. North Face
This movie is based on a true story from 1936. Due to German propaganda that calls upon the country’s climbers, two men try to climb the 13,000-foot wall, known as the Eiger.
9. Back Country
This is a movie about a couple taking a camping trip. One is an experienced camper while the other is not. When they realize that they have wandered into a dangerous bear territory, the adventure gets real.
10. The Ruins
The Ruins is about a group of friends that travel deep into the Mexican jungle to view an archeological dig. However, they soon find themselves fighting to survive when they realize that something is still living among the ruins.
11. In the Heart of the Sea
Most of us have heard of the story of Moby Dick, but we don’t know the whole story. This movie fills in the gaps and much to most people’s surprise, it is based on the true story of a New England ship by the name of Essex. It faced a large whale attack, but then the survivors had to fight to stay alive in the aftermath.
12. Eight Below
Eight Below is one of our more family-friendly movies. It is actually a Disney Movie starring Paul Walker. He has 8 sled dogs, and they find themselves trapped in Antarctica during a brutal storm. His love for his dogs encourages him to push forward until they are rescued.
13. The Way Back
The Way Back is based on a true story that took place in 1940. There are seven prisoners who are escaping the Siberian gulag. They have barely any supplies, yet must travel across 4500 miles of some of the most unforgiving terrain. This is their story of survival.
14. Into the White
I love the storyline for this movie. There are two fighter planes (one German and one British) that are shot down. The men have very little supplies, but soon figure out that they must weather the storm together in a small cabin. If they plan on surviving, they must put their differences aside and work together.
15. Frozen
I’m not talking about the infamous Disney movie. This storyline is based around 3 snowboarders. They were trapped and then forgotten about on the ski lift. They must figure out how to survive while being left dangling high in the air.
16. The Disappeared
This movie is one based on a young child going missing. Though he is never found, his older brother (who carries a lot of guilt over his disappearance) begins to hear voices. Will those voices lead him to the truth about his younger brother’s disappearance?
17. Into the Wild
This is a true story based around a wealthier college graduate who decided to walk away from all he had ever known and embraced the wild in his life.
18. USS Indianapolis: Men of Courage
If you are a fan of Nicolas Cage, then you’ll be excited to see this movie. This is the true story of military men who were lost at sea in shark infested waters at the end of World War II.
19. The Donner Party
This is a true story of a group of men who followed their fearless leader on a new path to California. He promised it would be shorter, but what they found were rough snowstorms and obstacles that threatened their lives.
