Have you ever had the flu?
Well, until about a week ago, I would have had to answer ‘no’ to that question. Last weekend I was sitting at my desk finishing up some work when I began noticing my throat was becoming sore, and I was losing energy fast.
But who has time to be sick? So I pushed on through the day and halfway through the next day until I hit the brick wall of sickness. Needless to say, the flu stinks!
Yet this is no reason to not fight it and do it as naturally as possible. I mean, if you can use what’s already on hand and avoid the expense of the doctor why wouldn’t you?
Here are some natural remedies that might help you conquer the flu:
Home Remedies for the Flu
What is the Flu?
Before we dive into how to cure the flu naturally, let’s discuss what the flu actually is. Basically, the flu is a virus which is why it is so hard to knock out. Since it is a virus, it means that antibiotics will not help you overcome the flu.
You should look for these symptoms when trying to recognize the flu:
- A cough
- A sore throat
- Body aches
If you begin to notice that you have any of these symptoms, then you’ll know that you cannot ignore them and that you should do what you can to treat them as quickly as possible.
Now, here are the treatment options:
The best thing you can do to combat the flu is simply to get some rest. Your body is fighting a really nasty virus. You don’t need to be out and about infecting other people.
Instead, you need to stay home where you can expose fewer people to the flu, while also giving your body the chance to fight what is making it so sick. It can’t do this without plenty of rest.
So when you find yourself not feeling well, then plant yourself in a comfortable spot, grab a blanket, and catch as many zs as possible. Your body will thank you for it.
2. Bone Broth
Bone broth is a great thing to sip on or make soup out of when you have the flu. Let me rephrase that, for someone else to make you soup out of when you have the flu. You won’t feel like cooking when you have the flu nor should you be preparing food for other’s consumption at this point.
But I digress, bone broth is wonderful at supporting your gut health. When your gut is getting a boost, so is your immunes system.
So you’ll want to indulge yourself in anything healthy (such as bone broth) when your immune system is battling anything as nasty as the flu virus.
This little herb is not only gorgeous to look at, but it is a fighter as well. Echinacea is known for being able to kill viruses.
So this is a huge deal because though doctors have come out with Tamiflu (which is meant to be a medicine to fight the virus.), it isn’t effective after the first 48 hours of the flu virus, and a lot of people get no effect from taking it at all.
But with this herb, you just put it in warm water and gargle it. It then begins fighting the virus and doesn’t have nearly as hefty a price tag as Tamiflu can have.
Do you take a probiotic daily? If so, then you’ll certainly want to keep that habit up while enduring the flu.
But even if you don’t, then you may want to have a friend or family member run to the store and pick some up for you while you are down with the flu.
Again, maintaining a healthy gut will be exactly what your immune system needs to get rid of the flu virus.
You can get added amounts of zinc in multiple ways. Perhaps some of the most delicious ways is upping the amounts of spinach and beef you eat while down with the flu. You may not have the biggest appetite, but you can choose wisely when you do feel like eating.
Either way, you’ll want to include more zinc in your diet in order to have a greater chance of boosting your immune system naturally.
Also, zinc has an amazing anti-viral effect. This is great news when you are needing something to help your immune system beat the flu virus.
6. Oregano Oil
Are you looking for a natural option for something that has anti-viral properties? If so, then you should look no further than oregano oil.
So this little jewel is a great option if you are looking for a natural antibiotic. It is being found that it can do what regular antibiotics can do, but it does it without the added side effects.
7. Vitamin C
Most people already know this, but when you have a sickness of any kind, then it is always a great idea to up your vitamin C.
So the reason is that vitamin C gives your immune system a huge boost which is always appreciated when your body is battling things.
But vitamin C helps your immune system because it boosts your white blood cells. So this is always a good addition to your diet when battling the flu.
8. Vitamin D
Vitamin D is also known as the sunshine vitamin. We didn’t realize how important vitamin D was for our bodies until recent years when we began seeing an increase in illness and health issues when people stopped being outside as much.
So it should come as no surprise that vitamin D is a huge help when you have the flu because it will help boost your immune system. Which, again, is a great help when your body is in the heat of the battle with the flu.
Elderberry is one of the plants that we are starting to hear more and more about as the years go on and the healing properties it offers.
So basically this herb is another natural way to boost your immune system. It also will help to relieve sore sinuses too.
Which is great news because the flu can often bring about congestion which leaves your face feeling rather sore.
10. Brewer’s Yeast
This might sound like an odd option for fighting the flu naturally. Brewer’s yeast is great for fighting bacteria that might be in your intestines.
So this is a good thing because a lot of your immune system is found in a healthy gut.
Also, the flu can cause stomach upset as well. So you need some help to combat the issues that the virus can cause in that area as well.
11. Essential Oils
I have already written an article about which essential oils can help you recover from the flu naturally and effectively.
So if you are looking for a natural remedy for the flu, then consider pulling out your essential oils and putting them to use.
Also, this is another natural way to help your body heal from such a destructive virus.
12. Stay Hydrated
I had always read before getting the flu how important it was to stay hydrated. I knew that it was to support your body so it could be at its best when fighting against sickness.
But you would really be amazed at how much better you actually feel when staying hydrated. Keep in mind this doesn’t just mean that you drink water all day.
Instead, you can enjoy popsicles to keep your throat moist and free from any aches or pains. You can also enjoy fruit juices, like pineapple juice that also serves as a natural cough medicine too.
13. Green Tea
Green tea is a great way to battle the flu virus. It is known for its antioxidants. That is why so many people drink green tea in an effort to stay healthy and beat other illnesses such as cancer.
So when you are down with the flu and want to beat it naturally, then consider green tea. After all, it works in two ways.
First, it will keep your body hydrated so it can function properly. Second, it will help cleanse your body of any impurities which should aid in you healing quicker.
When Should I See a Doctor?
The flu is a very serious virus. I don’t want to downplay it simply because there are natural remedies to some of the ailments the flu brings with it.
However, you know your body better than anyone. It is normal for the flu to last 7-14 days, but you also know when your body is not getting better as well.
So if you ever feel like your body is completely off, then reach out to your doctor for examination. The flu is dangerous to small children, older adults, and those who have a compromised immune system.
Also, if you are struggling to breathe or cannot keep down liquids for more than 24 hours, you need to seek medical attention as soon as possible.
Well, there are some natural remedies to help you get over the symptoms that the flu brings more often than not.
But I’d like to hear from you now. What do you do to provide comfort to your body when you have the flu?
